Having a mouse or a rat in your home is not a pleasant thing - they can be a serious health risk in kitchens or areas where children play as they can carry and transmit diseases.
A mouse can damage your home and property by gnawing through wood and plastic. This can lead to significant damage and will end up costing you money if the problem is not dealt with.
Mice can even cause house fires by chewing through electrical cables, the cost and inconvenience of this is not even worth considering, as it will be astronomical.
Signs and sounds you will hear if you have a mouse problem
The typical signs of a mouse problem are:
- Scratching/Rustling noises: – Typically heard in walls, ceilings and floorboards as mice shuttle around all these areas of your property.
- Droppings – mice produce small, dark droppings of faeces where they have been active, this is normally around where they feed and drink
- Distinctive smell – mice leave a trail that leaves an ammonia-like smell that will be particularly strong in more enclosed areas such as under cupboards
- Damage – mice have teeth that grow continuously and will gnaw on wood, plastic, cables and other hard materials
- Nests – Mice/ Rats build nests with shredded material such as newspaper and fabrics. These will tend to be in hidden places such as behind fridges. Nests will often contain offspring. Rats tend to burrow into the ground in gardens and outdoor areas
Mouse/Rat Pest Problem prevention in home
The most common questions asked when trying to prevent Mouse and Rat infestation problems at home are:
- What are the best Rat/Mouse prevention methods?
- What are the best forms of deterrents?
- Do Ultrasonic frequencies prevent Mouse and Rat infestations?
- What are the best products on the market to prevent Mouse and Rat problems in my house?
The initial thing to do is to look to prevent any potential Mouse and Rat infestations. Mice have soft skeletons and can get through the smallest of gaps, so it is important to seal any holes to the exterior and fit bristle strip around doors. Another method of filling holes is with metallic mesh wire and plaster fill. This will come into effect if the Mouse or Rat tries to eat through, it will get a nasty shock when it bites into the metal and will never try to get through that whole again, hence potential mouse/ rat infestation solved.
It is important not to attract mice with food – where possible, store food in plastic or metal containers. Regularly clean under cookers, fridges and cupboards.
Ultrasonic repellers emit sound that is uncomfortable for mice but cannot be heard by humans. These may help deter mice from entering a home in the first place so can be seen as an effective tool to prevent infestations but they are not recommend for existing infestations as mice and rats can quickly acclimatise to ultrasound.
